April 18-April 22

This week I worked Monday 8-12, and Thursday 8-12.  Monday, after helping a few photographers set up, I mostly watched their shoots.  Two of them, Henry and David, shot products with porcelain and metal.  I really watched how they solved reflection problems.  Because David was shooting silos, he just laid black cards around to reduce the reflections on the outside of the pot that he shot.  Then he used a small (approx. 7" x 7") silver reflector card to fill in the reflection on the spoon that was attached.  He says to use silver because if you use white too much, it starts to look fake.

On Thursday, I ripped a couple more sets, packed and loaded equipment for a location shoot and helped prep an antique chaise lounge for refinishing.  It was a good day because a few of the photographers offered a lot of helpful career advice and a few job leads too.  Per Adam, the production assistant, they will be shooting on location next week and he would try to allow me to come next Friday.
I also learned a few more vocab words this week:
Dead Man: a box with wheels and a long stick attached used to hold up walls
Stick in the mud: a long stick in a can of dried cement used to support walls or reflectors
Cookie: sheet of diffusion material in a frame with a lot of holes sliced into it.  Used to break up light, as if it were shining through trees.

No real challenges or problems for me to solve but there was an interesting way Henry solved a problem he had.  The client sent the wrong size framed painting to shoot.  So Henry cut out a black piece of paper of the correct size and hung it on the wall for them to use to space everything out correctly.  He hung the smaller size painting on top of the black paper and shot the shot.  Then the graphic designers could cut out and blow up the painting to the correct size and overlap the black paper.
